This is what you get in the More version of this window (you use the More button to show it).

Bouncing Balls - Visuals - Controls, Text and layout

For Bouncing Balls:Configure: Beat labels and counting system, controls to show, what to show on the blocks, and whether to show tempo

Show the beats as BLOCKS - below the bouncing balls

Show the beats for each part as blocks below the bouncing balls display - you can use this to skip beats, accent beats and so on with left and right clicks...

How to use the blocks

The blocks can be used to accent or skip individual beats or to adjust the timings or volumes of the beats.

For more information hover the mouse over any of the blocks.

Blocks needed to show Parts Adjustments

To adjust the instrument for a part, silence or enable the part, or change the number of beats for a part, select Show Parts adjustments (click on the gray semi-circle to the left of the display). The blocks will be shown if not already visible.

Various rectangles, diamonds, ovals and triangles will appear to left and right of the blocks. Hover the mouse over each shape to see what it does.

Blocks needed to show Shadows

If you have shadows switched on then you need to show the blocks in order to see the shadows. That's because the shadows move over the lower part of the bouncing ball display over the area where the blocks are shown.

Show the bars & beats as BLOCKS below bouncing balls - for Rhythm Cycles

Show all the measures for the additive rhythm as blocks below the bouncing balls display...

How to use the blocks

The highlight shows the current bar in the additive rhythm. The highlight changes when it is time to change to the next bar in the rhythm.

Also, when you play the metronome without sound (just the bounces) or when the metronome is stopped you can change the bar manually.

Click on any bar to change to that bar straight away. This doesn't work when you activate Play Sound however because the visual highlight gets automatically synchronised with the sound.

Individual beats for this type of additive rhythm

This rhythm is made using a script in Tune Script (Ctrl + 171)

So, you can't adjust the individual beats with these rhythms. You can still use them with swing switched on. If you want to adjust individual beats in the rhythm, you need to investigate the script and learn how to edit it to make the rhythm you want to play.

It's on my wish list to add an option in the future to let you adjust individual beats in these scripted rhythms just as you do with the other rhythms - would involve some kind of automatic update of the script whenever the user clicks or right clicks on a beat in the blocks display.

Set the height of the area below the window to show the bar as blocks

LABEL BEATS - DROP LIST

Choose how to label the beats - as beat numbers, beats with subdivisions, and various other options such as fractional position in the bar...

Some of the options may do with a bit more explanation:

Individual beat sizes

Labels each beat with its duration in beats. So this will label them all as 1 if all the same duration.

But if you use swing or vary the size of individual beats e.g. in Beats volumes and times (Ctrl + 76) then this option will show the exact size of each beat.

So for example with 2/4 with quaver hard swing, will label the quavers as 1.5, 0.5, 1.5, 0.5

Position in bar as fractional beats

Position from start of bar in fractional beats. So for entire bar, counts number of beats in the bar

Example, 2/4 with quavers hard swing, will label as 0, 1.5, 2, 3.5, 4, for the quaver beats, and labels the crotchet beats as 0, 1, 2.

Position in bar

Will label as position from start of bar counting 1 for the entire bar.

How to Count the Beats (Ctrl + 246)

Choose from standard ways of counting beats and subdivisions - or make your own custom system. You can also enter rhythms in Standard Beat Boxing notation...

Some highlights in this window to mention:

Show PARTS ADJUSTMENTS

Show the Parts Adjustments - controls to left and right of the blocks which you can use to adjust individual parts in the rhythm...

Use the diamonds, ovals and rectangles to the left of the bouncing ball display to hide bouncing balls, change the instrument for a part, or silence a part.

Use the triangles to the right to change the number of parts, or the number of beats in each part.

You can use the controls in 3D Bouncing Balls, Drum stick or Conductor's baton (Ctrl + 224) similarly.

To find out what any of these controls does, just hover the mouse over it to bring up its tool tip.

Bouncing Balls - Other Visuals (Ctrl + 225)

For Bouncing Balls - configure:Colours, Shadows and Splash, Motion, and Display

Bounce Preferences (Ctrl + 220)

Includes: SYNCHRONISE BOUNCES WITH SOUND - configure LEFT MIDDLE AND RIGHT MOUSE CLICKS on the bouncing balls display - KEYBOARD TAPS AND SHORTCUTS - and other options for the bouncing balls.

Right click lower right to set instrument for beat

Shows a Coloured dot at bottom right of each bea. You RIGHT CLICK on it to change the instrument for just that beat.

This lets you play the part with a different instrument for each beat. If you don't see the blue dot then you can switch it on in the More version of Bouncing Balls - Visuals - Controls, Text and layout (Ctrl + 233)

You get the non melodic percussion menu if set to hide melodic instruments and features.

Otherwise, use SHIFT + RIGHT click on the dot to bring up the non melodic percussion menu and CTRL + RIGHT click to bring up the Waveform Instruments menu.

Note type name for

Number of beats per bar in this notation - often set to number of beats in first part - or to 4 for polyrhythms - gets set automatically...

How to use

Select the desired type of note in the drop list e.g. crotchets or quavers. Then enter how many of them there are in a bar.

Gets set automatically whenever you change the rhythm.

For most rhythms best choice is the number of beats in the first part counted as crotchets or quavers.

For the Drum & Dance or Flamenco metronomes, then you can use same notation you use to enter the notes.

Best choice for polyrhythms is usually 4

For polyrhythms then 4 works well here (or 8 or some power of 2).

Then you get an unadorned crotchet (or whatever it is) for any parts with 4 beats per bar, and for other numbers of beats per bar, you get the note shown in n-tuplet notation.

That way all the rhythms in a polyrhythm can be shown with exact note sizes. Best way to do the polyrhythms at present.

If you use other methods, e.g. the number of beats per bar in the first part - then the other parts in a polyrhythm will show approximate note sizes in square brackets.

Scale text to block height

Switch ON for LARGE TEXT when the window is large, switch off if you want to see more text on the blocks when the window is large...

This makes the font size larger when the window is resized to a larger size.

Note - even with this option switched off, the text is resized when you make the window HD size or larger to the same proportions you get for HD - that's so that the text is easy to read when printed out or in HD animations.

auto rescale for HD resolution and higher

Normally switched on. Makes the text easy to read when printed out or in HD animations.

When switched on, the text is resized when you make the window HD size or larger, to keep to the same proportions you get for HD.

So as you make the window smaller than HD, the labels stay at the same size, but when you make them larger than HD, the labels are made larger in proporion to the window size, so that they look the same as the HD labels.
