Schlesinger's theory is unlikely to have been true for Greek music at any date, but her scales are fascinating in their own right. Her theory suffers from questionable historical evidence, internal inconsistencies, and an insufficient appreciation of playing techniques and the vagaries of wind instruments. Her arguments re notation seem circular to me. The material she presents on non-western music is interesting and may be correct, at least in part, but is of questionable relevance. However, as I stated above, her scales are of considerable interest. I have found the two books listed below to be the best available: Ancient Greek Music. M. L. West. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1992, xiii, 410 pp., illus. ISBN 0-19-814897-6. Greek Musical Writings. Volume II, Harmonic and Acoustic Theory. Andrew Barker.
