Acknowledging these very valid and important points, I have nevertheless :-) written a proof-of-concept program to do just this for the AWE32/64 (SoundFont 2.0 banks) in Visual Basic for Win95. Octave-based, 12-tone-only, as the purpose was to explore historical keyboard tunings. I'd be interested to discuss (off the list, if that would be more appropriate) issues and ideas concerning this approach with others of like mind.
