Set a different seed for each layer of construction of the melody...

This makes a tune with several seeds playing at once. If you use the options to rotate or permute the layer played, then the seeds will also change around from part to part.

### How to get here

Seeds for Layers button in
Tune options, drone, && Undo / Backups (Ctrl + 33), or ** Ctrl + 31**

### How to use this window

Select Seeds for layers.

Then to make the seeds by hand, set the number of seeds to play, highlight a row, then change the seed in the main window or use the buttons.

To edit the highlighted row you can use the Seed as Chart, or Seed as Text button, or edit the main window seed.

If that doesn't work, make sure you have the Editable check box switched on in the More version of
** Seeds for Layers (Ctrl + 31)**.

Alternatively you can use the Make Modular Arith. Seeds button in the More version of
** Seeds for Layers (Ctrl + 31)** to fill several rows in one go.

## Rhythm fractal to layer

How many layers the rhythm should be fractal for...

The idea of a fractal rhythm is that when a seed plays a single note in a slower moving layer, it should play it faster, or more slowly, depending on how long the note is in the seed at the slower moving layer. This ensures that each seed in every layer has the same internal rhythm - but means that seeds in the faster layers are continually changing speed to remain within single notes of the slower seeds. So if the seed in layer 3 for instance is playing a short note, layer 2 will be playing a fast seed, and layer 1 will play a whole succession of fast seeds so that they can all fit within that single short note in layer 3.

If you set the number of layers of fractal rhythm variation high here, then the rhythm of the fastest seed is likely to vary considerably as the tune progresses from very slow to extremely fast.

Makes seeds for all the rows in one go...

Try this with a random formula - use the Rand. formula button to create one.

The number of rows is set to be the same as the modulus.

You can use the Randomise Formula button to make a random formula. Then use the Make Modular Arithmetic Seeds button to fill the seeds for layers.

### How the formula works

L = layer

N = position in seed - 1, i.e. the position starting at 0 instead of 1

SHORTCUT FOR FRACTAL TUNES OR METRONOME

You can use Shift + click to fast forward...

Also Ctrl to fast forward even more. Shift multiplies the tempo by 10 and Ctrl multiplies it by 100, so the two together would play a fractal tune at for instance, 60,000 instead of 60 as the tempo. This is useful sometimes for fast forwarding through fractal tunes.

## Volume

Set master volume for FTS. Other controls also affect the volume...

Bs | Play control brings up the master volume control for Windows as a whole.

The volume is also affected by the volume for individual parts in the Parts (Ctrl + 9) window.

For the Wave shape player, go to the Wave Shape Player Audio Format (Ctrl + 188)

For CSound instruments, you can set the overall volume in the C Sound Save Opts (Ctrl + 168)

You can also vary the volume in Out | Options | More | Volume remapping, note on / off volumes etc. (Ctrl + 158) and if playing from Midi In there's another setting at In | Options | Keyboard Options | Touch. (Ctrl + 91)

F1 or click shows the help for the current window in your web browser.
