Formula for seeds in L, N, X, P1, P2, in Modular (or Clock) arithmetic...

 +
You can use the Randomise Formula button to make a random formula. Then use the Make Modular Arithmetic Seeds button to fill the seeds for layers.
 +
 +
===How the formula works===
 +
 +
L = layer
 +
 +
N = position in seed - 1, i.e. the position starting at 0 instead of 1
 +
 +
P1 = previous number in the seed for this row
 +
 +
P2 = number two places back in the row.
 +
 +
etc.
 +
 +
X = position in seed as decimal between 0 and 1 - useful when multiplied by other numbers e.g. sin(2*pi*X)*10 gives number between 0 and 10
 +
 +
You can use functions like sine, cos etc that yield fractions - the final answer of the calculation is converted to the nearest whole number.
 +
 +
Then you subtract the first number in the seed from all the numbers.
 +
 +
Finally, it's modular arithmetic, so you find the remainder on dividing by the modulus. So, the seed numbers you get are always between 0 and the modulus.

Seeds for Layers

Seeds for Layers

Set a different seed for each layer of construction of the melody...

This makes a tune with several seeds playing at once. If you use the options to rotate or permute the layer played, then the seeds will also change around from part to part.

How to get here

Seeds for Layers button in Tune options, drone, && Undo / Backups (Ctrl + 33), or Ctrl + 31

How to use this window

Select Seeds for layers.

Then to make the seeds by hand, set the number of seeds to play, highlight a row, then change the seed in the main window or use the buttons.

Seeds for layers

Switch on seeds depending on layers

Scales for layers...

Set a scale and arpeggio for each layer of construction of the melody

Seed to play for layer

Edit main window seed or use the buttons to edit the highlighted row...

To edit the highlighted row you can use the Seed as Chart, or Seed as Text button, or edit the main window seed.

If that doesn't work, make sure you have the Editable check box switched on in the More version of Seeds for Layers (Ctrl + 31).

Alternatively you can use the Make Modular Arith. Seeds button in the More version of Seeds for Layers (Ctrl + 31) to fill several rows in one go.

Rhythm fractal to layer

How many layers the rhythm should be fractal for...

The idea of a fractal rhythm is that when a seed plays a single note in a slower moving layer, it should play it faster, or more slowly, depending on how long the note is in the seed at the slower moving layer. This ensures that each seed in every layer has the same internal rhythm - but means that seeds in the faster layers are continually changing speed to remain within single notes of the slower seeds. So if the seed in layer 3 for instance is playing a short note, layer 2 will be playing a fast seed, and layer 1 will play a whole succession of fast seeds so that they can all fit within that single short note in layer 3.

If you set the number of layers of fractal rhythm variation high here, then the rhythm of the fastest seed is likely to vary considerably as the tune progresses from very slow to extremely fast.

Make Modular Arith.Seeds

Makes seeds for all the rows in one go...

Try this with a random formula - use the Rand. formula button to create one.

The number of rows is set to be the same as the modulus.

Uses modular arithmetic, and the formula.

Rand. formula

Randomise the formula for Make Modular Arith. Seeds

Rand. formula

Formula for seeds in L, N, X, P1, P2, in Modular (or Clock) arithmetic...

You can use the Randomise Formula button to make a random formula. Then use the Make Modular Arithmetic Seeds button to fill the seeds for layers.

How the formula works

L = layer

N = position in seed - 1, i.e. the position starting at 0 instead of 1

P1 = previous number in the seed for this row

P2 = number two places back in the row.

etc.

X = position in seed as decimal between 0 and 1 - useful when multiplied by other numbers e.g. sin(2*pi*X)*10 gives number between 0 and 10

You can use functions like sine, cos etc that yield fractions - the final answer of the calculation is converted to the nearest whole number.

Then you subtract the first number in the seed from all the numbers.

Finally, it's modular arithmetic, so you find the remainder on dividing by the modulus. So, the seed numbers you get are always between 0 and the modulus.

Shows this window with either less space, less options, or alternative layout

Pause

Pause playback, or continue play

Play

Click here to play it...

What this plays depends on the task selected from the Tasks menu.

It can play a retuned midi clip, chord progression, fractal tune or metronome

SHORTCUT FOR FRACTAL TUNES OR METRONOME

You can use Shift + click to fast forward...

Also Ctrl to fast forward even more. Shift multiplies the tempo by 10 and Ctrl multiplies it by 100, so the two together would play a fractal tune at for instance, 60,000 instead of 60 as the tempo. This is useful sometimes for fast forwarding through fractal tunes.

Volume

Set master volume for FTS. Other controls also affect the volume...

Bs | Play control brings up the master volume control for Windows as a whole.

The volume is also affected by the volume for individual parts in the Parts (Ctrl + 9) window.

For the Wave shape player, go to the Wave Shape Player Audio Format (Ctrl + 188)

For CSound instruments, you can set the overall volume in the C Sound Save Opts (Ctrl + 168)

You can also vary the volume in Out | Options | More | Volume remapping, note on / off volumes etc. (Ctrl + 158) and if playing from Midi In there's another setting at In | Options | Keyboard Options | Touch. (Ctrl + 91)

Editable

When unselected, main window seed is NOT USED - no effect on the tune...

Select to edit the highlighted row by changing main window seed. Normally selected.

Multi layer MW Seed

Make main window seed into multi-layer seed by breaking at every 0...

Example of use - if you enter the decimal expansion of some mathematical constant as the main window seed with the digits interpreted as seed numbers - then this will make multiple layer seeds from it by breaking the expansion at every 0 found.

You can convert the digits of a long decimal expansion to seed numbers by prefixing with 0, or use Text As Seeds - use any text to generate seeds (Ctrl + 132)

Help = F1

Click for help for this window. Or F1. Other opts: Shift , Alt, Ctrl + click...

F1 or click shows the help for the current window in your web browser.

Some windows may have no help yet in which case the help icon is shown crossed out with a red line.

Shift + F1 or Shift + Click brings up the tool tips extra help window (this window) to show any extra help for a tool tip.

You can tell if a tool tip has extra help if it ends ... like this one.

Ctrl + F1 or Ctrl + click takes you to the list of keyboard shortcuts for Tune Smithy.

Alt + F1 or Alt + click (alternatively Caps lock physically held down + F1 or Click) takes you to the on-line page at the robertinventor.com web site about the current main window task - which gives a short introduction to it for newbies to the program. If there is no on-line page specific to a task, takes you to the main tune smithy page on the web site.

Since the help for Tune Smithy is currently a bit out of date and needs to be redone completely for the new 3.0 release, then you may find the on-line page for some of the newer tasks particularly useful.

Organise Windows = F2

Shows the Organise windows window - which you can use to reset all the parameters for the current window.

You can also use it to save the settings for just this window, or open previously saved parameters for just this window.

Also has a drop list of all the windows and their shortcuts, and related options - some to do with the menu listing, and some to do with window resizing and minimising.
