Tune options, drone, && Undo / Backups
Set a different seed for each layer of construction of the melody
Transform the seeds, also polyrhythms, drones, DNA music, ...

If the seed is too long for the pattern it gets truncated.

For instance up by 5/4 on long beats and down by 6/5 on short beats or whatever, some such arrangement.
Result is that the tune may not fit into an particular single scale, but drifts up and down by intervals instead.

You can enter an alphanumeric seed or DNA / protein sequence etc.
Note - you can enter words as alphabetic seeds even when unselected...
Select to show the seeds as words, and to make sure that data you enter is treated as an alphabetic seed even if it is valid for a number input.
To show how it works when unselected - for instance 0120 as all one word isn't a valid number input because numbers don't start with 0 so that will get treated as an alphabet seed for the characters 0 1 2 0.
But 120 would be treated as the number 120 when this is unselected. Usually best to select it if you are using alphabet seeds.

Set a chord progression
You can also set the volume, e.g.V 100, V 50 etc.

The O is a quarter note, the o is an eighth note, and the _ before a note sets it to strum the same chord as the one before. So this rhythm is played all on the same chord.
If you wanted to change chords in the middle for instance, you would leave out an _ as in:
v 100 O _ v 50 O O _ o _ o
Or if you want a 6/8 type pattern you could do e.g.
v 100 Oo _ v 50 o. . o
where the Oo and o. are dotted notes - you can combine beats together by just placing the characters next to each other so that they touch.
Set a play list of fractal tunes, or set tempo changes...
Unlike a normal play list, these fractal tunes become part of the tune you are working on. You can open the original files into this tune, but once you do so, they then become part of this tune, and if you change the original it will have no more effect.

You need many layers to make sure the tune continues for a long time without repeating - maximum of 50.
If you have a fractal tune in several parts and have Parts | Order of Play | By Layer or By Layer with Simultaneous notes selected, make sure you have at least as many layers as you have parts you want to hear.
Seeds that have first numbers anything other than 0 can go very high or low, depending on the number of layers you have. See 1.08a\Virtuoso violin with flute for an example of this.

How many layers the rhythm should be fractal for...
The idea of a fractal rhythm is that when a seed plays a single note in a slower moving layer, it should play it faster, or more slowly, depending on how long the note is in the seed at the slower moving layer. This ensures that each seed in every layer has the same internal rhythm - but means that seeds in the faster layers are continually changing speed to remain within single notes of the slower seeds. So if the seed in layer 3 for instance is playing a short note, layer 2 will be playing a fast seed, and layer 1 will play a whole succession of fast seeds so that they can all fit within that single short note in layer 3.
If you set the number of layers of fractal rhythm variation high here, then the rhythm of the fastest seed is likely to vary considerably as the tune progresses from very slow to extremely fast.

When you build the tune up fractal fashion, the seed numbers add up which can make the tune go very high eventually.
This option helps reduce that tendency. The lower the layer that you ground the tune at, the less the tune numbers will vary as the tune goes on.
It does it by reducing the notes for seeds in that layer down into the first octave (or repeat) of the arpeggio. So for instance if set to play the pentatonic arpeggio in a twelve tone scale, then if the seed would normally play a 16 say, it will play a 4 instead, reducing it down into the first repeat - it is for an octave repeating arpeggio repeating at scale degree 12 here.

You can also add your list to the main window drop lists.
Good way to get started - randomise the current tune && configure randomisations
Pause playback, or continue play
Play midi clip, chord progression, fractal tune or metronome..
What this plays depends on the task selected from the Tasks menu.
SHORTCUT FOR FRACTAL TUNES OR METRONOME
You can use Shift + click to fast forward...
Also Ctrl to fast forward even more. Shift multiplies the tempo by 10 and Ctrl multiplies it by 100, so the two together would play a fractal tune at for instance, 60,000 instead of 60 as the tempo. This is useful sometimes for fast forwarding through fractal tunes.

The volume is also affected by the volume for individual parts in the Parts window. Also in the case of midi instruments you can configure the volume for windows as a whole using Bs | Play Control - Volume.
For the Waveform player (triangle wave etc), go to the Waveform Player Audio Properties window (Ctrl + 188))
For CSound instruments, you can set the overall volume in the CSound Options window (Ctrl + 168))

Volume for notes when they are in the middle of a rest at slower moving layer...
This is used to multiply the volumes. For instance if set to 1/2 then the faster moving layers play at half volume when the slower moving layer is silent.

This is meant to deal with compatibility issues with some earlier saved tunes. However those should be sorted out now.
If you find it is still necessary, let me know with an example tune so that I can fix it. It's only for backwards compatibility to play old saved tunes. If you switch this on then many later features won't function properly should you want to add them to your old tune. So if you find any remaining compatibility issues it is best if I can sort them out.
It only emulates a particular central section of the 2002 version of FTS.

F1 or click shows the help for the current window in your web browser.
Some windows may have no help yet in which case the help icon is shown crossed out with a red line.
Shift + F1 or Shift + Click brings up the tool tips extra help window (this window) to show any extra help for a tool tip.
You can tell if a tool tip has extra help if it ends ... like this one.
Ctrl + F1 or Ctrl + click takes you to the list of keyboard shortcuts for Tune Smithy.
Alt + F1 or Alt + click (alternatively Caps lock physically held down + F1 or Click) takes you to the on-line page at the robertinventor.com web site about the current main window task - which gives a short introduction to it for newbies to the program. If there is no on-line page specific to a task, takes you to the main tune smithy page on the web site.
Since the help for Tune Smithy is currently a bit out of date and needs to be redone completely for the new 3.0 release, then you may find the on-line page for some of the newer tasks particularly useful.

Or F2 - Reset / save / open for individual windows, right click for cat. list...
Shows the Organise windows window - which you can use to reset all the parameters for the current window - or save them all, or open previously saved parameters for just this window. Also has a drop list of all the windows and their shortcuts.
You can also right click on this icon as a quick way to get the floating drop menu of all the Tune Smithy windows organised by category
