To make your own rhythm choose one of the custom options. For instance for the two beat rhythms, choose Custom two beat.

Ratio of long to short beat

Auto set to make all layers have same ratio if possible, so same rhythm...

The slower moving layers of construction of the tune have larger beats, which then are subdivided into smaller beats for the faster layers. This works out the rhythm so that all layers have the same ratio of long to short beat.

To hear this, make sure that Parts | Choose Parts by is set to By Layer so that each part plays a separate layer. Then all the parts will play the same rhythm, at varying speeds.

Whenever you change the beat patterns, this gets updated - however after you have entered the substitutions for the L, M and S, you can then go to this field and change the numbers if you don't care about making the rhythms the same in all the layers.

It may be done analytically by solving an equation, or it may be done by recursively repeating the substitution many times to see what ratios turn out if you do that, then feeding that ratio back into the substitutions to check to see if it works.

Note that it doesn't try to be particularly elegantly presented, just to get the job done. Sometimes you may see the same equation appear up to six times for instance, then each root tested anew each time, as it was easiest to program it that way. One would never do it like that by hand but this was easier to program than the way one might set about it by hand.

Ratio of middle to short beat

Auto set to make all layers have same ratio if possible, so same rhythm...

The slower moving layers of construction of the tune have larger beats, which then are subdivided into smaller beats for the faster layers. This works out the rhythm so that all layers have the same ratio of long to short beat.

To hear this, make sure that Parts | Choose Parts by is set to By Layer so that each part plays a separate layer. Then all the parts will play the same rhythm, at varying speeds.

Whenever you change the beat patterns, this gets updated - however after you have entered the substitutions for the L, M and S, you can then go to this field and change the numbers if you don't care about making the rhythms the same in all the layers.

SHORTCUT FOR FRACTAL TUNES OR METRONOME

You can use Shift + click to fast forward...

Also Ctrl to fast forward even more. Shift multiplies the tempo by 10 and Ctrl multiplies it by 100, so the two together would play a fractal tune at for instance, 60,000 instead of 60 as the tempo. This is useful sometimes for fast forwarding through fractal tunes.

Volume

Set master volume for FTS. Other controls also affect the volume...
