Is great fun to watch but highly improbable. E.g. in Star Trek when they describe a "blockade" - you'd have a lot of trouble finding other spaceships at all in the vastness of space - even given some super technology.

And - you have to laugh when they talk about going 1000 kms over a boundary set between stars many light years apart, and the enemy warship instantly notices and is waiting for you when you cross over into this zone where you aren't supposed to be.

Just don't have any idea how vast the distances are between stars. Either that or done deliberately because the stories just wouldn't work if you were more realistic - perhaps that's more the reason.

We used to have stories about Leprechauns and such like

Who knows, maybe they do exist, but I've never seen one.

Now we have stories about these

I think they are about on the same footing really :).

The leprechaun is not totally imagined. Includes things like rainbows, gold, old men, small people, clothes etc.

Our Star Trek includes warp drive, force fields, structural integrity fields, transporters, and holodecks.

Perhaps more imaginary than leprechauns come to think of it.

But fun and entertaining and educational.
