His name wasn't "Buddha". It was "Siddhartha Gautama".  When he woke up and became enlightened he became the Buddha, which means "Awakened one". So Buddhism is named after awakening, which is what the path of the Buddha is about. See BBC - Religions - Buddhism: The Buddha
