Nowadays you can use an online metronome or get metronome software. I'm the author of Bounce Metronome which you can see here with a bouncing sprite, one of the options I added last year.

A software metronome can be more flexible than any of the existing mechanical or electronic metronomes.

It's got "go silent briefly" this is great for help with your sense of time and rhythm

It's for Windows and Linux only at present but I just launched a kickstarter to get it running on the Mac which looks likely to succeed now at 89% funded

There's a huge range of metronomes to choose between, including many online ones. I do my best to maintain a list of them, but it quickly gets out of date. Anyway you may find some useful metronomes here

It doesn't yet have Android, or iOS, or Max OSX metronomes in it, just Windows and Online. But the online ones particularly give you plenty to get started.
