Lissajous Patterns
One of the many features that come as part of Fractal Tune Smithy

This is a visual effect you can get in Tune Smithy as you play your music. Beautiful Lissajous figures are created in response to the notes you play. When you play harmonic series based ("just intonation") chords then you get figures that join up like this

Lissajou 7/5 7/3 : 1/1
8/7 7/6 6/5 2/1 : 1/1
Lissajou 15/14 10/7 : 1/1
Lissajou 7/6 3/2 2/1 : 1/1

Lissajou 1/1 7/6 : 1/1
Lissajou 10/9 3/2 : 1/1 as shown in the FTS Lissajou window
:

The last one there shows how it looks in FTS.

When you play more complex chords, or ones that aren't based on harmonic series, then they may continue a long way before they yoin up, or not join up at all. You can also change the colours used and make patterns like this:

The last of those images is made with another of my programs - Lissajous 3D. You can install both, run both, set Lissajous 3D to respond to chords played in FTS from Lissajous 3D | Opts and then you will see figures like these, in three dimensions, turning around and spinning if you so wish, and they will change shape in response to the chords you play in FTS.

To find out about Lissajous 3D, see Lissajous 3D .

What to do next

Freeware / Shareware status:

This feature is free with a splash screen.

When you show the patterns in 3D in Lissajous 3D, that's a shareware program. However the freeware mode of Lissajous 3D is fine for showing chords as you play in Tune Smithy. You need to purchase Lissajous 3D if you want to use its screen saver, to show its patterns full screen, and for some of its advanced features.

To continue reading about Tune Smithy go on to Microtonal Explorations which introduces some of the many ways you can use the program (many of which can be used with the Lissajous figures).

The program comes with a Free Test drive with all the features completely unlocked (start the test drive at any time):
